Electrical port module is characterized by low power consumption, high performance, and a compact design. This electrical port module is primarily integrated into products such as switches and network cards, widely used in Ethernet. Depending on the speed of the electrical port module, it can be categorized into 100Mbps electrical port module, 1Gbps electrical port module, 10Gbps electrical port module, and adaptive electrical port module.

In this case, the customer is a manufacturer of electrical port modules and cables, requiring the performance testing of a Gigabit Ethernet port module. Based on the customer's testing scenarios and actual needs, RIGOL provided relevant equipment support for the testing.

Customer Case: Gigabit Ethernet Port Module Testing

To ensure that the module meets design requirements and functions properly, digital oscilloscopes and power supplies are often used in the R&D process for testing Gigabit Ethernet port modules. Unlike popular optical modules, electric modules primarily transmit electrical signals without undergoing optoelectronic conversion. RIGOL provides programmable linear DC power supplies to assist customers in completing performance tests for Gigabit and higher-speed electrical port modules.

Testing the Gigabit Ethernet port module involves connecting the electric module to the driver board. Subsequently, a linear power supply is used for four-wire power, and the power is driven through a computer program. In the customer's actual testing process, a voltage of 3.3V and a current of 3A are required. When outputting a high current, the voltage drop on the load leads becomes significant and should not be ignored.

Actual Testing Setup by the Customer

To ensure accurate voltage for the load, the customer utilized the RIGOL DP2000 series power supply to provide power to the product under test. The rear panel output terminals of this power supply series offer a Sense (remote compensation) working mode. In this mode, the detected voltage is at the load end rather than at the power supply output end. This allows the instrument to automatically compensate for voltage drops caused by load leads, ensuring that the user-set power output value aligns with the voltage obtained by the load. Compared to the power supply used by the customer previously, the DP2000 series with three channels supporting the Sense working mode significantly reduces testing costs for the customer.

In addition, within the 20Hz-20MHz bandwidth, the ripple and noise indicators of the DP2000 series programmable linear DC power supply are less than 350μVrms/2mVpp. The ultra-low noise design minimizes any interference to the load, providing a high-purity signal for testing. The DP2000 series features multi-channel isolation and automatic series-parallel functions, assisting customers in dealing with multiple testing scenarios.
